Volunteer Spotlight – Brian McPartland

Matt, Lisa, Brian, and Kevin at the
2014 Putnam County Great Strides Walk.

Brian McPartland was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was born in 1993. Growing up he was a four sport athlete and never let CF slow him down.

The McPartland family immediately jumped into action upon receiving Brian's diagnosis over two decades ago and participated in their first Great Strides walk in 1994. Since then, they have continued to walk every year, as well as participate in and lead a variety of fundraising events to raise money for the Foundation.

Lisa, Brian's mother, has been the Family Team Chair for the Putnam County Great Strides walk for many years and has supported Brian's national team, helping organize Great Strides family teams at several locations across the United States. She has also been instrumental in engaging her employer, Tompkins Mahopac Bank, in getting involved with the walk as a corporate sponsor and team.

Brian's older brother, Kevin, founded the S.A.L.T.Y. Hands Club for CF at Brewster High School in 2006 along with another student who had a cystic fibrosis connection. Over the years, the club has raised CF awareness through participating in Great Strides walks and hosting an annual Mr. Brewster Spectacular. Kevin is now an active member of the Foundation's Young Professional Leadership Committee in Boston. Brian has been leading the charge for a cure as far back as nursery school with an annual "Fundathon" playground event for CF, and at age 12, was named one of America's top ten youth volunteers and New York's top youth volunteer in 2006, receiving a national Prudential Spirit of Community Award for his efforts in CF awareness and fundraising. Since 2010, Brian's Buddies, Tompkins Mahopac Bank, and Brewster High School have raised over $300,000 for the Foundation!

Brian is now 22 years old and a recent Duke graduate who double majored in Public Policy and Political Science. While at Duke, Brian founded the CureFinders for Cystic Fibrosis Club and helped organize the Great Strides walk on campus. As a practice scout player for the NCAA Division 1 Duke University women's basketball team, Brian inspired student athletes to join forces in CF awareness and fundraising for the Foundation.
