Event Highlights - 2012 CF Cycle For Life Riders

Congratulations 2012 CF Cycle For Life Riders!

The Chapter held its 2nd annual Aptalis CF Cycle For Life bike tour on September 23rd at William Sheridan Park, located in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  203 registered riders and 38 teams joined us on a beautiful Sunday morning to put their wheels in motion in honor of finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.  Over $100,000 was raised, surpassing last year’s successful ride!

Cyclists arrived at 7:00 am to receive their rider bib number along with an event t-shirt.  A delicious array of Bagelsmith bagels and Starbucks coffee and pastries were also provided for participants.

Early morning festivities included speeches from Board President and cyclist Tim Clark, Board member Peter M. Boger, President & CEO of our sponsor Ridgewood Savings Bank, and Chris Dopher, inspirational speaker and Cycle For Life rider living with cystic fibrosis.

Cris Dopher

"Cycle For Life was a wonderful ride with a well-marked route, great rest stops, and a good pre- and post-ride atmosphere.  I enjoyed the get together at Brooklyn Brewery very much! This year, based on the strength of last year's ride, I got a whole team together, including a couple of post-transplant CF patients, and we had a blast.  We did team training rides beforehand, raised lots of money for CFF, and are continuing our training rides over the next year with an eye toward doing the 65-mile route next year.

Speaking before the ride was also a high point for me.  I tried to impress upon the big-hearted participants that all of their fundraising efforts in the past, now, and in the future are having a massive impact toward whipping this disease, especially with the recent drugs coming to market that may provide a real control. Keep pedaling!"

The cyclists took off at 8:00 am and each decided between the 62-mile or 32-mile route, both paths equipped with fully stocked rest stops along the way.  Whole Foods Market provided a generous donation of fruit and snacks for our rest stops. Over 120 volunteers helped with the event, assisting with the distribution of food and t-shirts, checking in riders at registration, giving out supplies at rest stops, and cheering the riders along the route.  Volunteers from Ridgewood Savings Bank greeted the riders at the registration area and motivated them at the 9/11 Pier, Coney Island and Floyd Bennett Field rest stops.

Cyclists were greeted with cheers as they returned to William Sheridan Park and directed to the food tent to receive lunch provided by Olive Garden, Fornino Pizza and Chicago UNO Grill.

Afternoon festivities also included a live band and a picture station.  The weather could not have been more perfect!  After lunch and some R&R, riders headed over to the
Brooklyn Brewery to celebrate!

Other sponsors included AVIS and Different Spokes Bike Shop, which provided a custom bike worth up to $750. The drawing was held on October 26th and we’d like to congratulate Matt Gerard on taking home the prize!

The event was a perfect way to spread awareness throughout the cycling community, since many riders had little knowledge of cystic fibrosis. We are grateful for their support. It was also a great day to welcome in the fall season!

The Greater NY Chapter would like to thank all riders, sponsors and volunteers for their hard work to help make the 2012 CF Cycle For Life event a success!  We hope everyone had a wonderful time and stay tuned for a bigger and better CF Cycle For Life in 2013!  We will be hosting a brand new Long Island ride on ride on October 5, 2013 and the 3rd annual Brooklyn ride on September 22, 2013.

We also look forward to a having a CFF team ride in the TD 5 Boro Bike Tour
