Event Highlights - CYCLE for LIFE

2013 was an exciting year for the Greater New York Chapter Aptalis CF Cycle For Life bike program. This year, cycle events were held in both Brooklyn and Riverhead, NY. 2013 Aptalis CF Cycle For Life bike program was an exciting one for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Greater New York Chapter with cycle events held in both Brooklyn and in Riverhead, NY.

On Sunday, September 22nd the 3rd Annual Aptalis CF Cycle For Life took place in William Sheridan Park located in the heart of Williamsburg in Brooklyn.  Over 165 registered riders and 45 teams hit the sunny streets of Brooklyn to ride and raise money for CF research and care.  To date, the ride has raised over $120,000 and counting!

The day began with a hearty breakfast donated by Bagelsmith of Williamsburg and the Brooklyn Roasting Company and an opening program featuring speeches by Ride Chair, Ms. Kimberly Hale, James Colligan from Aptalis Pharmaceuticals, Peter Boger, President and COO of Ridgewood Savings Bank, and Roger Stattel, Team Leader and CF Dad. As in years past, Ridgewood Savings Bank was not only the local sponsor for the event with branches of the bank stationed at rest stops, but also had a team on the streets pedaling their bikes for CF.

This year, riders had their choice of either the 32 or 62 mile route.  The routes were changed and improved based on feedback from last year’s ride and to accommodate remaining effects of Hurricane Sandy.  Cyclists crossed the finish line at William Sheridan Park greeted by cheering volunteers who directed everyone to the food tent to receive lunch.  Afternoon festivities also included music at the finish line and our “After Pedal Party” at the Brooklyn Brewery.

This year, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation became an official charity partner of the TD Bank 5 Boro Bike Tour.  The bike tour takes place in May and hosts over 30,000 cyclists that ride throughout the 5 boroughs of NYC.  Ten cyclists were recruited to participate in this ride as Team Cycle For Life to raise money and promote CF awareness.  Team Cycle For Life also participated in the Brooklyn and Riverhead rides.  To date, they have raised over $27,000, surpassing their original goal of $20,000!  We cannot thank them enough for all of their efforts throughout the year!  The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation has already been accepted as a 2014 Charity Partner, and Team Cycle For Life hopes to grow over the next year.

The inaugural Aptalis Cycle for Life event in Riverhead took place on Saturday, October 5, 2013.  As with the Brooklyn event, our corporate sponsor Ridgewood Savings Bank was present in full force as both cyclists and volunteers.

The day began at 6:30am with registration and breakfast provided compliments of Always Bagels and Dunkin’ Donuts. Participants chose from picturesque 32, 62, and 100 mile routes featuring views of beautiful farmland and Long Island Sound.

At the finish line, volunteers, family, and friends greeted cyclists with a wonderful barbecue donated by Applebee’s Restaurants and beer donated by Brooklyn Brewery.  Awards went out to our Top Fundraisers along with some fun acknowledgements including best dressed team, wildest riding outfits, and cyclists who traveled the farthest.

31 teams and over 160 cyclists have raised over $60,000 and counting for this inaugural event!  Many thanks to all who participated-- cyclists, volunteers, sponsors and supporters! We are looking forward to next year’s event with 33 cyclists already registered!

The Greater NY Chapter would like to thank all of the riders, sponsors and volunteers for all of their hard work to help make the 2013 Aptalis CF Cycle For Life events in both Brooklyn and Riverhead a huge success! We hope everyone had a wonderful time and look forward to having a bigger and better CF Cycle For Life program in 2014!
